Being of the minority.
I was applying for something at school when I noticed at the bottom of the school’s website that it listed something about being a visible minority. It then proceeded to list off these minorities which included: non-Caucasian skin tone, aboriginal, disabled & women. Yes, women. I mean, yes there is more men than women (101.3 men for every 100 women – source: 2001 World Almanac) but really? At this day and age why are women still considered “minority”? Why are aboriginals listed separately than non-Caucasian?
Also, I don’t get why they are opening schools to accommodate a certain race. Toronto school boards last year approved making an all black skin school. Thunder Bay opened a school specifically for aboriginals. I know they want to try and help fix drop out rates (latest reports for black students had a drop out rate of 40% compared to the average rate of all schools being around 10%) but there has to be better ways.
I know everyone’s been going mental for this whole 80’s fad again, now with this whole race oriented schools and women minority thing it seems like we’re back into the early 1900’s! WE’RE GOING BACKWARDS! Next thing you know we’ll start doing surgeries like lobotomy’s like this again:
